The Kit-of-Parts Ecosystem

Organiser - Terra Viva

Type - Wildlife Pavilions

Location - Torbiere del Sebino, Italy

Year - 2023

Result - Finalist

The Kit-of-Parts Ecosystem proposes three experimental pavilions designed in harmony with nature. The kit-of-parts system maximises the potential for flora and fauna to flourish through design based on an understanding of the exact needs of its users. Rather than one designated space for nature, the design strategy allows for a plethora of spaces that vary in size, temperature, light levels and spatial complexity.

Leiðarljós Coffee Shop

Organiser - Buildner

Type - Cafe, Visitors Centre

Location - Hverfjall Volcano, Iceland

Year - 2022

Result - Shortlisted

Leiðarljós (ley-de-los-th) translates as 'guiding light' in Icelandic. The design intent was to create an architecture that directly draws inspiration from its unique, natural surroundings. Located at the base of Hverfjall Volcano, the circular building nestles itself at the beginning of one of the two protected hiking routes up to the ridge of the turf ring volcano. Panoramic views of the landscape are achieved due to the building's form. Clad in copper, the building's façade will slowly change over time, weathering to a verdigris green.

The brief for this project was to design a romantic cabin for two in a rural part of Northern New Zealand. We proposed a cabin of three large rocks; the three healing hearts of the cabin. One contains rock fire; a space to eat, one rock contains water; a space to wash, and one contains a space to rest.
